Frequently Asked Questions

Each tourist operator sets their own timetable. Lantern H & H's season runs from approximately May 20 to Oct 20.

We opened in May 2002 and achieved instant success, setting new levels of standards in the accommodation business in Cape Breton, given our proximity to the beach and the high level of quality we offer our guests.  In October 2015 we were honoured to qualify as a 4.5 star-rated property by Canada Select, Canada's national accommodation rating program.

Since opening, we have been ranked as one of the highest rated tourist accommodation properties in all of Cape Breton and Nova Scotia by TripAdvisor, the world's largest review based travel website and Booking, com, one of the world’s leading booking accommodation online websites. We consistently achieve a 95% review score from both of these reputed travel sites each and every year.

Our proximity to the beach is one of our main advantages and offers our guests a premier seaside experience. Our cottages are within 50 ft to 250 ft from North Bay beach. Bonfires on the beach under the moon and stars are a big hit with kids, both young and old!

We had a delightful selection of beautiful artisan and craft shops only 30 minutes from us in either direction on the Cabot Trail. Be sure to ask us for the artisan map of the shops which feature local artwork, pottery, wood and leather creations, glassworks and name just a few.
Baddeck is south of us along the Cabot Trail just 1 hour and 15 minutes while Cheticamp is 2 hours to our north. These make ideal day trips with lots to do and see!

Lantern Hill & Hollow does not serve any meals. Ingonish has a great array of casual and fine dining options. All restaurants have fresh seafood selections available such as Atlantic lobster, snow crab, mussels, haddock and halibut. Here are our favorites:
  • Andrew's Pizzeria - fabulous pizza, wings, donairs and subs
  • Bean Barn Cafe - a quaint cafe with lots of goodies; breakfast and lunch items
  • Coastal Waters - known for their burger creations
  • Keltic Lodge Resort's Purple Thistle Dining Room - a grand evening dinner
  • Keltic Lodge Resort's Highland Sitting Room - order a pre-dinner cocktail and/or snack and be entertained by a local performer every night of the week
  • Main St. - their specialties are seafood and pasta
  • Seagull Restaurant - a 'locals' favorite known for their fish n' chips
  • Thirsty Hiker Pub - quench your thirst while listening to live music
Ingonish Freshmart is our local grocery store located just minutes up the road.

We also have a government liquor store and convenience store very close by in Ingonish Beach.

There is the Co-op, another grocer 15 minutes away in Neil 's Harbour which sells some liquor.

These stores are conveniently open on Sundays during the prime summer months.
The lobster fishing season in this area starts in mid-May and finishes in mid-July. If you time it right you can buy lobster directly from the local fisherman on their boats at the wharf in North Bay (just minutes away).

We also have a great seafood shop just up the road and depending on availability Rod can supply you fresh seafood selections. He does a superb job cooking lobsters for you too if you prefer to buy them ready to eat!

Explore the numerous hiking trails as well as the self-guided walking trails and roadside exhibits which belong to the Cape Breton Highlands National Park.

Take in a round of golf at Highlands Links, one of Canada's highest-rated 18-hole courses, just five minutes away. Spend countless hours biking, bird watching or fishing.

Enjoy an adventure on the water: guided whale and nature cruises, canoeing or sea kayaking.

Ingonish Beach is staffed with life-guards every day of the summer and there are numerous other gorgeous sandy beaches to discover aside from the one here.
Every evening of the week during the prime summer months, we are fortunate to have live music at two venues- the Keltic Lodge's Highland Sitting Room and the Glenghorm's Thirsty Hiker Pub. As the weekend comes upon us, Coastal Waters has music too!
